Well, we have seen that many big companies are investing thousands of dollar in SEO, the same can be done at affordable cost by following the same.

The First step in SEO is to know your competition. Go to your competitors sites and analyze them. After you have a firm grasp to what your competitors are doing, you will be in much better position to beat them.

Start with selecting the keyword tag that should consist of the most important keywords around which your website revolves. Once your URL is prepared start submitting it to webcrawler, Alexa, Excite and other open Directories.

Then comes the work of off Page Optimization, you have to procure backlinks to your site from other pages, remember the more backlinks it will help you to earn a good PR, the same can be performed by blogging, reciprocal links with other similar sites, writing articles and taking part in forums by leaving url as a signature.

After all this procedure remember that content is the king. People are looking for a site they can trust to provide accurate, information and products. they could care less about how many times the phrases they searched is shown on the page. They want real information.

Website promotion is one of the main requirements for a successful business venture and finding ways to promote your business at no cost is a huge bonus.

If you are serious about your SEO, then I would only trust it to a proven professional. Be sure to request previous results of any SEO firm that you are interviewing. Many SEO experts claim to get results, but only a few can prove it.

If you do work that involves SEO and you are paid for it, you are a SEO professional. If you dont get paid, you are not a professional. That does not mean you are good at SEO, since you could be a "bad" SEO professional... :-

And while all those skills you mention are good, its important to remember that SEO stands for "Search Engine Optimization" which is not really an accurate name. Most SEOs do not optimize seach engines, they optimize web sites so they are indexed better BY search engines.

And that optimization is limited to keyword research, site modifications if needed, and meta tag / site content optimization. Search engine and directory submissions, link building, article submissions all add to the idea of increasing traffic, but are really not part of the core process of SEO, IMO.
