DNS, or Domain Name System, is a hierarchical naming system for computers and other resources and systems connected to the Internet. DNS translates domain names, which are alphabetic and meaningful to humans, into a numerical, binary representation. This numeric representation, or IP address, is used for networking purposes and allows computers and systems to communicate via networks, the largest of which, is the Internet.

 

An analogy that is often used for DNS, is that the system serves as a "phone book" for the Internet. DNS translates human-friendly host names into IP addresses.
